One idea to carry along
Sorting can make a big choice smaller, and asking for help can still be part of doing something yourself.
Choose a pretend outing, gather a few safe objects, and make three landing spots: NEED, MAYBE, and STAY HOME. The child leads the sorting and explains the plan.
Try it together
- Pick the outing. A short park walk, library visit, or backyard picnic works well.
- Gather a few choices. Use five to eight safe objects. Include one or two silly extras to make the choice interesting.
- Sort together. Use the Pack Light, Pack Right sheet to place each item in NEED, MAYBE, or STAY HOME.
- Test the plan. Put the selected items in a small bag. Does it close comfortably? What could change next time?
Keep the conversation going
Use the sentence starter: “I chose ___ because ___.” A grown-up can offer help by asking a question instead of choosing for the child.
Grown-up note
There is no one right packing list. The goal is a child-led explanation and a manageable bag, not a perfect answer.
