The Middle Son ready for an outing

For the family walk, the Middle Son packed a ball, a book, three shiny stones, two small toys, and one very lumpy sandwich.

He pressed the backpack closed. Tug! The zipper stopped. He gave it a gentler pull. Tuuug. Still stopped.

Mom offering calm encouragement

“I wanted to do it myself,” he said, with a little huff. Mom sat beside him. “You are doing it. Want help thinking?”

They made three small spots on the rug: NEED, MAYBE, and STAY HOME. The Middle Son pointed at each thing and made the first choice.

The snack went in NEED. The ball went in MAYBE. The stones could have a rest at home. One small toy was plenty for today.

This time, the zipper slid from bottom to top. Zzzzip! The backpack closed with room to breathe.

“I made the plan,” he said. Mom smiled. “And you still made the choices.” Off they went—lighter, and very proud.
